Reporting a Life Status Change (Marriage, Baby, and More)

Modified on Mon, 14 Sep at 1:57 PM

Purpose

A qualifying life event, such as a marriage, a birth or the loss of other coverage, opens a special enrollment period so you can change your benefits outside open enrollment. This article covers reporting the event in UZIO and what happens afterwards.

Before you start

Report a Change is available only when all of the following are true:

  • You are currently enrolled and your coverage is in effect.
  • No other life status change of yours is still pending.
  • None of your plans has a future effective date.

If the option is missing or will not open, one of these is the reason. Ask your HR team which.

Events you can report

Marriage, birth, adoption or guardianship of a child, divorce, employee loses other coverage, employee gains other coverage, dependent gains other coverage, loss of Medicare, loss of Medicaid or SCHIP, Medicare eligible, Medicaid or SCHIP eligible, dependent ineligible due to age, death of a covered dependent, and court order.

A few event types, including address change, class change and coverage maintenance, are handled by your employer or broker rather than from your portal.

Report the change

  1. Go to My Benefits and click Report a Change.
  2. Choose the event and enter the Event Date. Your changes take effect from that date, not from the date you report it.
  3. Confirm that you want to report the event, review who is currently covered, and add dependent details if the event adds someone.
  4. Choose your plans, either through Create Your Own Health Profile, a guided questionnaire that recommends plans, or Show Me Medical Plans to browse everything you are eligible for.
  5. Continue Enrollment to check out. Verify everyone's details, which go to the insurance carriers, add doctors for any new dependents, declare other insurance you hold, accept the terms, sign, and Submit Application.

You see a confirmation screen, and the change appears on your Benefits Dashboard. Once this event has completed you can report another one with Report a Change.

What the change affects

  • Your paycheck. Your deductions change from the event's effective date, so the first pay stub after the change usually looks different. See Understanding Your Pay Stub.
  • Your carriers. The new election flows to the carrier through your employer's enrollment process. New insurance cards come from the carrier, not from UZIO.
  • Your record. A dependent you add here becomes part of your benefits record. Your own personal details are separate and are updated under My Info.

Some of what a life event changes is not handled in UZIO at all, such as the beneficiaries on a life insurance policy or a name change with your carrier. Check both after the event.

Warning: A qualifying life event carries a deadline, commonly 30 to 60 days from the event date. The deadline comes from your employer's plans, not from UZIO. Report the event as soon as it happens. If you miss the window, you normally wait for the next open enrollment.

On the mobile app

Reporting a life status change is not available in the UZIO mobile app. Use the employee web portal, on a computer or in your phone's browser. See Using the UZIO Mobile App.

Need help?

Whether an event qualifies, what the deadline is, and what proof your carrier needs are questions for your company's HR or benefits team or your company's broker. Contact them before the deadline rather than after it.
