Understanding Your Pay Stub

Modified on Mon, 14 Sep at 1:57 PM

Purpose

Read your UZIO pay stub section by section, so you can answer "why is my pay this amount?" without asking anyone. Open any stub from Payroll > Pay Stubs, and download it as a PDF with Download Pdf.

Who can do this: Any employee with pay stubs in the portal. If there is no Payroll tab, your employer has hidden payroll from the employee portal; ask your HR or payroll team for a copy.

The header

Your name, Employee ID, SSN (masked, only the last 4 digits show), Net Pay (the headline number, what reached your account), Voucher# and Payroll# (reference numbers to quote if you ask HR about this check), Pay Period (the days you are being paid for), and Pay Date (when it was paid).

Note: The pay date is normally after the pay period ends. A June 24–30 period might pay on July 6. You are not missing a week; that is normal processing time.

Employee Income Tax Withholding Information

An echo of your current W-4 settings: filing status, credits, additional withholding, plus your state's equivalents such as California allowances. If your taxes look wrong, this block shows the settings that produced them. Change them under Payroll > Federal Tax Withholding.

Employee Earnings

Each pay item with Hours, Rate, Current, and YTD columns. Current is this check. YTD is your running total for the year.

Common lines:

LineWhat it is
Regular Wage, Overtime, Double OvertimeWorked time at the applicable rate
Holiday, Holiday PremiumCompany holidays and any premium your employer pays for working them
Vacation, SickPaid time off taken in this period
Bonus, CommissionOne-time or variable pay
Meal Break Premium, Rest Break PremiumPremium pay owed when a required break was missed or cut short
ReimbursementsApproved expense and mileage claims. This line is produced by the system and cannot be edited by your employer on the paycheck. See Submitting and Tracking Expenses
PTO Balance PayoutA time-off balance paid out in cash, for example when you leave

Employee Taxes Withheld

Line by line: Federal Income Tax, Social Security, Medicare, and your state's items such as CA State Income Tax or CA Disability Insurance, each with Current and YTD. These are the amounts your employer withheld and remitted on your behalf.

Employee Deductions and Employer Contributions

Deductions are amounts taken out of your pay: benefits premiums, retirement contributions, and any court-ordered garnishment, which appears among your deductions. Employer Contributions are amounts your employer pays on your behalf, such as their share of your insurance. Contributions are shown for transparency and do not reduce your pay.

Net Pay Distribution

Where the money went. For direct deposit this lists each account (type, routing number, masked account number) and the amount deposited, plus Total Net and YTD Net. If you split your deposit across accounts, each split has its own row. See Submitting Your Direct Deposit Information. If you are paid by check rather than direct deposit, this section shows the payment rather than a bank account.

Note — DailyPay: If you are enrolled in DailyPay earned wage access, your stub carries a footnote: "Net pay for this paycheck was routed through your DailyPay account per your enrollment. Visit the DailyPay portal for transfer history and details." The amounts on the stub are unchanged. Only the destination differs, and the transfer detail lives in the DailyPay portal rather than in UZIO.

Time Off Details

If your policies display balances on stubs, this section lists each policy with Accrued (Current) / Used (Current) / Accrued (YTD) / Used (YTD) / Balance, as of this pay date. See Understanding Your PTO Balance and Accruals.

The math, in one line

Gross earnings − taxes − deductions = net pay. When a check looks different from the last one, compare those three groups against the previous stub. The difference is almost always visible in one of them: extra hours, a bonus, a reimbursement, a new benefit deduction, or a tax-setting change. Why Your Paycheck Changed This Period works through the usual causes.

On the mobile app

You can open and download the same pay stubs in the UZIO mobile app. Sign in with the same username and password you use for the web portal. The stub content is identical. See Using the UZIO Mobile App.

Still stuck?

If a line on the stub is wrong or you cannot account for it, contact your HR or payroll team. Give them the Pay Date, the Voucher#, and the exact line you are asking about. They can trace it in payroll; UZIO cannot change your pay.
