Purpose
UZIO connects to Checkr so you can order pre-employment background checks and follow their progress without leaving UZIO. You connect once. From then on you order checks for prospective employees and existing employees from one Background Checks page, and Checkr reports each check's status back into UZIO. Checkr bills you directly; UZIO does not charge for the checks.
When to use this: connect Checkr if you run background checks as part of hiring and want ordering and status in the same place as the rest of the hire. If you order only occasionally, you can keep using Checkr's own dashboard; the integration adds convenience, not capability.
Who can do this:
- In UZIO: users with access to the Integrations page to connect, and users with permission to hire and onboard prospective employees to order checks (typically the Employer Admin in both cases).
- In Checkr: an account administrator, to authorise UZIO and to manage packages, nodes, and billing.
What flows between UZIO and Checkr
| Direction | What moves | When |
|---|---|---|
| UZIO to Checkr | An invitation for the candidate: name and contact details, the package you chose, and (with account hierarchy) the node and work location | When you click Send Invitation |
| Checkr to UZIO | The status of each check as it progresses, and a link to the report in Checkr | As Checkr processes the check |
| Stays in Checkr | The report itself, adjudication decisions, adverse-action letters, candidate stories, packages and pricing, users, and payment details | Always. UZIO shows status and a link; it never copies report contents |
UZIO shows you the result. It does not make or record a hiring decision from it, and it does not stop or advance onboarding based on the outcome. Those remain your decisions, taken in Checkr and in the hiring workflow.
Connect to Checkr
- In the Employer Portal, open Integrations from the left menu.
- Find the Checkr tile (category Background Checks) and click Connect. You are taken to Checkr's hosted sign-up and sign-in page.
- Already a Checkr customer? Choose Sign In, sign in as a Checkr administrator, and authorise UZIO. You are returned to UZIO with:
"Successfully connected to your Checkr account."
The tile shows Connected.
- New to Checkr? Choose Sign Up, enter your company information and payment details (card or bank account; Checkr invoices you, not UZIO, and you can change the payment method later in the Checkr dashboard), then click Finish Sign Up. You are returned to UZIO with:
"Your Checkr connection request has been submitted successfully. It may take 1-3 days to credential your account. Please check back later."
The tile shows Verification Inprogress while Checkr credentials your account. Expanding the tile shows the reason:
"Your Checkr account is awaiting credentialing. If you have used your existing Checkr account, it may take a while. If you have signed up for a new Checkr account, this process may take 1-3 days. Please check back later. If it has been longer than three days, please contact Checkr customer support."
When Checkr approves the account, the tile changes to Connected and you can start ordering.
Disconnect appears as a link inside the expanded tile, and only once the account is credentialed. It is not shown while verification is in progress.
One Checkr account, several UZIO companies
A single Checkr account can serve more than one UZIO company. If the Checkr account you are connecting is already linked to other UZIO employers, UZIO asks first:
"[Checkr account name] is already connected to [UZIO company names]. Do you wish to continue?"
Click Yes to link this company too. Disconnecting later removes only the current company; the connection stays live for the others until the last one disconnects.
Order a background check
You can start a check from two places.
- While adding a prospective employee. The add-prospect flow offers a background-check step; see Adding Prospective Employees. You can skip it and order later.
- From the Background Checks page. Open HR Tools > Background Checks in the left menu. This page lists every check for prospects and current employees.
To order from the Background Checks page:
- Click Run Background Check (top right).
- Select the candidate and complete the popup:
- If your Checkr account uses account hierarchy (see below): choose the Node, the Package, the Country, and the State. City is optional free text.
- If it does not: choose the Package.
- Click Send Invitation and confirm.
Checkr emails the candidate an invitation to authorise the check and supply their details. The check's estimated completion time and its live status appear in the grid on the Background Checks page.
Note: Checkr uses the work location to decide which disclosures and authorisations the candidate must see, which is why Country and State are required when your account uses hierarchy.
Account hierarchy and nodes
In Checkr, nodes are the locations, teams, or groups that place orders. Each order is placed from a node and can use only the packages assigned to that node, and Checkr's invoice shows which node ordered which package. Charges for a new node's checks appear on the invoice within two billing cycles. Nodes and their packages are managed in your Checkr dashboard by your Checkr administrator, not in UZIO. If a node shows no packages in UZIO, assign packages to it in Checkr first.
Track and review checks
- HR Tools > Background Checks lists every request with its current status. A prospect's profile page also shows their check status next to their job details.
- A check typically moves from Invitation Sent (waiting for the candidate) to Pending (the candidate has authorised and Checkr is working) to Checkr's report status, for example Complete.
- Once a report exists, a View in Checkr action appears. It opens the candidate's report in Checkr, where you review the details and record any decision.
Note: Checkr publishes a candidate-experience guide that explains the process from the applicant's side. Share it when a candidate asks what to expect.
What happens when a check completes
Checkr notifies UZIO, and the status on the Background Checks page and the prospect's profile updates. That is the extent of the change in UZIO: the prospect's onboarding status does not move, nothing is blocked, and no one is emailed by UZIO. Review the report in Checkr, then continue or stop the hire in UZIO as you would for any prospect. Adjudication, adverse action, and any letters to the candidate are done in Checkr.
Resubmit a failed request
If a request fails, whether from the Background Checks page or the hiring journey, UZIO shows an error with a retry path. You can always order again from HR Tools > Background Checks: Run Background Check, select the candidate, complete the popup, and submit.
Disconnect
Expand the Checkr tile and click Disconnect. UZIO asks:
"Are you sure you want to disconnect the integration with Checkr?"
Click Yes. The page confirms:
"Successfully disconnected from your Checkr account."
Checks already ordered continue in Checkr; you follow them in the Checkr dashboard. UZIO stops receiving status updates and the Run Background Check button no longer places orders.
Common problems
The tile has said Verification Inprogress for more than three days
Credentialing is Checkr's step, not UZIO's. The tile itself tells you what to do: after three days, contact Checkr customer support and ask about your account's credentialing status. UZIO Support cannot speed this up.
I cannot see Disconnect
Disconnect is a link inside the expanded tile, and it appears only after Checkr has credentialed the account. While the tile says Verification Inprogress there is nothing to disconnect yet.
No packages appear for my node
Packages are assigned to nodes in the Checkr dashboard. Ask your Checkr administrator to assign the package to that node, then reopen the Run Background Check popup.
Checks cannot be ordered although the tile said Connected
Checkr can end the connection from its side, for example when the account's authorisation is revoked in Checkr. Refresh the Integrations page. If the Checkr tile now offers Connect, connect again as a Checkr administrator. If it still says Connected but orders fail, disconnect and reconnect, then try again.
The candidate says they never received the invitation
The invitation is sent by Checkr to the email on the candidate's record. Check the address on the prospect's UZIO record and in Checkr, and ask the candidate to check spam. Resend from the Checkr dashboard or place the order again from the Background Checks page.
Still stuck?
Questions about credentialing, packages, pricing, invoices, report contents, or adverse action go to Checkr customer support; they own those parts of the process.
If the Checkr tile is missing from your Integrations page, if the connection fails repeatedly, or if statuses from Checkr are not appearing in UZIO, please reach out to us at support@uzio.com or call +1-571-601-1752. Send your company name, the candidate's name (no report contents), the date and time you sent the invitation, a screenshot of the Background Checks row, and the exact text of any error.
