Purpose
Your W-4 tells payroll how much federal income tax to hold back from each paycheck. Update it yourself from the portal when your circumstances change: a marriage, a new dependent, a second job, or a refund or bill last year that was bigger than you wanted. State withholding has its own tab and its own fields.
Who can do this: Any employee whose employer allows employees to manage their own payroll details. If the screen is missing or read-only, your employer has kept withholding under their control. Ask your HR or payroll team to make the change.
Update your federal withholding
- Open Payroll in the employee portal. The Federal Tax Withholding screen is the default view.
- Click the edit (pencil) icon and update the fields:
| Field | Notes |
|---|---|
| Exempt from Federal tax Withholding? | Yes/No. "Yes" stops federal income tax withholding entirely. It does not stop Social Security or Medicare. |
| Filing Status | For example, "Single or Married filing separately" |
| Multiple Jobs | Optional checkbox (W-4 Step 2) |
| Annual Child & Dependent Credits | $ (W-4 Step 3) |
| Annual Other Income | $, optional (Step 4a) |
| Annual Deductions | $, optional (Step 4b) |
| Additional Withholding Per Pay Period | $, optional (Step 4c) |
| Withhold income taxes as a nonresident alien employee? | Yes/No |
- Click Update. A Download Blank W-4 Form link on the same screen gives you the IRS worksheet if you want to work out the numbers first.
State withholding has its own tab, State Tax Withholding. The fields vary by state, and the screen shows each state as complete only once its required fields are filled in.
Note: If your record still holds a pre-2020 W-4, you can save it once. Every change after that has to use the current W-4 fields shown above.
What happens next
Your change applies to payrolls your employer has not yet processed. It does not alter a paycheck already paid. Check that it landed on your next pay stub: the Employee Income Tax Withholding Information block on the stub echoes your current W-4 settings, so you can compare it against what you entered. See Understanding Your Pay Stub.
Note: UZIO cannot tell you what to withhold. Use the IRS Tax Withholding Estimator or a tax advisor if you are not sure what to enter.
Common problems
My state tax withholding won't save
"We could not save your state tax withholding information. Please review the highlighted fields and try again. If the problem continues, contact your employer's HR or payroll administrator."
Fill in every highlighted required field for your state and save again. Incomplete submissions are blocked on purpose. If every field is filled and the banner keeps coming back, the failure is on the system side. Send your HR or payroll team a screenshot of the banner and the state you were editing, as the message says.
My withholding didn't change on my paycheck
Compare the pay date against the day you saved. A change saved after your employer processed that payroll lands on the following one. If the stub's W-4 echo still shows the old values after a later pay date, tell your HR or payroll team the pay date and what you expected to see.
On the mobile app
You can view and update both your federal W-4 and your state withholding in the UZIO mobile app as well as the web portal. Sign in with the same username and password you use for the portal. The same employer permission controls both channels, and the app asks for the same state fields the web portal does.
The app screens for this task have not yet been re-checked on a store build for this release. If you cannot find the screen in the app, use the web portal. See Using the UZIO Mobile App.
